With the Copernicus environmental monitoring programme’s first satellite nearing launch, Portugal explores how best to exploit this initiative’s critical information.

Aiming for launch at the end of March, the first satellite built specifically for Europe's ambitious Copernicus environmental monitoring programme is now in the last stages of testing before being shipped to French Guiana for liftoff.

Like thermometers in the sky, satellite instruments can measure the temperatures of Earth's surfaces. ESA's new GlobTemperature project is merging these data from a variety of spaceborne sensors to provide scientists with a one-stop shop for land, lake and ice temperature data.

In this study the team combined time-dependent gravity and DinSAR ground deformation measurements demonstrating that are complementary to each other and their regular recording may disclose and clarify complex volcanic dynamics.

The media had a sneak peek at the first Sentinel satellite today ahead of its launch next spring.

Free and open access to Sentinel satellite data will be granted for the Copernicus operational phase.

A navigation system for self-driving vehicles that uses satellite radar data has won the top prize in the European Earth-monitoring competition.

With water security being one of Africa's biggest challenges, ESA's TIGER initiative is using satellite observations to provide local authorities with the information they need to develop this vital resource.
