ESA is pleased to announce the forthcoming introduction of the new Sentinel-2 Product Specification Document (PSD) in version 15.0:

  • This new PSD 15.0 supports the forthcoming Sentinel-2C (and Sentinel-2D) specifications, which is the main update.
  • Moreover, in the Level-2A scene classification, the DARK_FEATURES class (Scene classification layer (SCL = 2)) is renamed as CAST_SHADOW. The computation of this class remains unchanged since Processing Baseline (PB) 04.00 (where shadows are separated from dark features pixels, such as dark soils and burned areas, which are assigned to the UNCLASSIFIED class (SCL = 7)). Only the name of the class is updated to better reflect what is flagged in that class since the PB 04.00 deployment.
  • A new entry ‘NA’ is added in the list of possible Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) retrieval methods for the atmospheric correction performed during the Level-2A processing. This AOT retrieval method is selected when the atmospheric correction cannot be applied (rare cases when all the pixels of a Sentinel-2 tile are tagged as no data or defective).
  • New instrument modes INS-MOON for moon acquisitions (new ability that will be performed by Sentinel-2C for calibration purposes) and INS-EOBD for degraded telemetry are added.
  • Other minor editorial corrections have been made and tracked in the change log..

The first Sentinel-2 products based on Product Specification Document (PSD) 15.0 will be tagged with Processing Baseline (PB) 05.11. The details of the transition will be communicated at a later stage in another dedicated news, including the deployment day and the corresponding Sentinel-2A and -2B data takes of transition.
