With the upcoming update of the Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5p) operational ground-processing system planned for the beginning of September 2024, a new updated processor (version V02.07.01) will be released for the following products: UV Aerosol Index (AER_AI), Aerosol Layer Height (AER_LH), Methane (CH4), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), and O3 Profile (O3_PR).

The main impact on the data products is as follows:

  • Aerosol Layer Height – AER_LH: The a priori error for the surface albedo of the AER_LH retrieval has been modified, resulting in improved performance over water.
  • Methane – CH4: A new destriping function has been applied to XCH4 data.
  • Carbon Monoxide - CO: The destriping method has been updated for OFFL CO, and a destriping function has been added for NRTI CO.
  • Nitrogen Dioxide – NO2: Additional diagnostic parameters (Wald-Wolfowitz runs test) have been added.

The update also includes:

  • Digital Elevation Model (DEM) update:
The DEM has been changed from GMTED2010 (U.S. Geological Survey) to the Copernicus DEM with 90m spatial resolution.
  • Lambertian-Equivalent Reflectivity Database (DLER): The DLER has been updated to include 5 years of data, with improved flagging for snow/ice information.

An updated processor (version 02.00.01) will also be released for the S-NPP VIIRS – Cloud auxiliary product, containing minor bug fixes.

The processor for the products O3 Total Column (O3), O3 Tropospheric Column (O3_TCL), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), Formaldehyde (HCHO), and Cloud product (CLOUD) will remain unchanged (version 02.06.00). For these products, the DEM also remains unchanged, and it is expected to align with that of the other products in the next update.

Further details on the algorithm updates and format changes are available to the user community in this document. Links to pre-operational sample data are also provided in the document.

Full detailed information will be provided within the Product Readme Files after the operational switch.

Please note that NRT products for data acquired during the downtime period will be not generated. After the successful deployment of the new system, version numbers of the first orbit generated with the new version of the S5p operational processors both, in NRT and OFFL, will be provided.
