Sentinel-4 Thematic Areas and Services

As part of the Copernicus Space Component element of the Copernicus Programme,  the SENTINEL-4 mission will provide routine observations in support of a variety of application areas and services related to air quality (which have been driving the SENTINEL-4 mission design), and other environmental themes such as stratospheric ozone and surface UV radiation, and climate. SENTINEL-4 data will be exploited by the CAMS as the prime user on the European scale, but also by regional and local service providers and end users.

Amongst the operational CAMS services the following services will benefit particularly from SENTINEL-4 data:

  • Daily production of near-real-time analyses and forecasts of European air quality and atmospheric composition,
  • Reanalyses providing consistent multi-annual datasets of European air quality and atmospheric composition,
  • Products to support policy users,
  • Solar and UV radiation products,
  • Anthropogenic emissions for the European domain.

The high spatial resolution, the fast revisit time, the high reliability, and the fast availability of SENTINEL-4 observations make the mission data particularly valuable for applications such as

  • Issuing alerts in support of health services in case of poor of air quality forecasts,
  • Monitoring volcanic activity and provision of SO2 and volcanic aerosol information to Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres,
  • Determination of sources and sinks of atmospheric pollutants for protocol verification and monitoring,
  • Regional and local air quality services.
