Ash and ice discrimination

Title: Ash and ice discrimination and retrievals over Etna

Description: These images highlight the ash/ice particles detection and retrieval obtained from Copernicus Sentinel-3’s SLSTR instrument, acquired on 7 March 2021 at 08:57 UTC. The upper plates (whole image on the left and zoom over Etna area on the right) represent the Brightness Temperature Difference-BTD (i.e. difference between the Brightness Temperature of the SLSTR channels centred at 10.8 and 12 µm) used for the ash and ice discrimination. The black and white pixels in the volcanic cloud, emphasised by the red oval in the zoomed image, indicate the presence of ash and ice respectively. The lower plates show the ash (left) and ice (right) columnar abundance retrieved.
