ESA is pleased to announce that the new Copernicus Data Access Service was successfully kicked-off  on 16th December 2022.  The new service will be powered by T-Systems and CloudFerro with their cloud infrastructure, Sinergise and VITO with Sentinel Hub and OpenEO data discovery and processing tools, while DLR, ACRI-ST will provide on-demand Sentinel processing and RHEA access to the Copernicus Contributing Missions data.

The new Copernicus Data Access Service follows on from the success of the current Copernicus Data Hub distribution service led by SERCO, which has reached today a total of 500 PB of Sentinel data downloaded by a growing community of more than 600,000 registered users. The new Copernicus Data Access Service also builds on the DIAS-es services, ensuring their continuity but also going further.

The new Copernicus Data Access Service will make Sentinel data immediately available through various interfaces – ensuring a continuity of legacy query and download APIs and offering new interfaces and functionalities, including direct S3 access with STAC items and cloud-optimized formats to streamlined access APIs, which will allow not just to fetch the data but also to process it directly in the Data Access ecosystem.

The first service roll-out is planned for the end of January 2023 with continuous upgrades over the upcoming months until  the Copernicus Data Access service is fully  available by June 2023. Users of the Copernicus Data Hub will be able to start migrating their workflows to the new service as early as end of January 2023.

The legacy Copernicus Data Hub distribution service will remain in operations until end of June 2023 to allow a smooth migration to the new Copernicus Data Access service by all user communities. The Copernicus Data Hub distribution service will continue offering access to Sentinel data  with a gradual ramp-down of the operations capacity and data offering until end of September 2023.

Further details on the new Copernicus Data Access service interface and data offering will be available in January 2023. Users are invited to stay tuned for any further news about the evolution of the Copernicus Data Access service.
