An update of the Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5p) operational ground-processing system is planned by End November 2023. This includes changes in the algorithms and product format for many products. The new processor version will be 02.06.00 for all the TROPOMI Level 2 data, whereas for the auxiliary S-NPP VIIRS Cloud product, the version is updated to 02.00.00.

The main impact on the data products is:

  • Methane – CH4: the processor employs S-NPP VIIRS data as the primary cloud filter for identifying and eliminating cloud-contaminated pixels. The backup (secondary) cloud filter has been enhanced resulting in an improved cloud-filtering mechanism respect to the previous one. This means that when the S-NPP VIIRS data is not available, the quality of the CH4 remains at the nominal level, while in previous processor versions the CH4 data was highly degraded, and not usable.
  • Aerosol Layer Height – ALH: the abrupt discontinuity in aerosol height at a land-sea crossing areas have been removed.
  • CLOUD: the co-registration between the bands that are used for the CLOUD retrieval (band 3/4 and 6) has been optimized by using the S-NPP VIIRS data. With this improvement, the first ground pixel can now be processed for the products CLOUD, HCHO, SO2 and Total column O3.
  • S-NPP VIIRS – Cloud auxiliary product: new parameters added, related to Cloud optical properties, Cloud Top Height and Cloud Phase.

More details on the algorithm updates and format changes are available to the user community in this document
