We are pleased to announce the imminent replacement, within the operational Copernicus Sentinel-2 constellation, of the Sentinel-2A satellite by the Sentinel-2C satellite.
The new Sentinel-2 "C" satellite unit, recently launched on 5 September did complete its in-orbit commissioning in late December 2024. During the in-orbit commissioning, a radiometric cross-calibration between Sentinel-2C and Sentinel-2A in tandem configuration was performed to maximize the consistency of data products generated by both satellites.
The transition in operations is planned to occur seamlessly on 21 January 2025 between two orbits. The data provided to users will continue uninterrupted, with Sentinel-2C data replacing Sentinel-2A data, ensuring a seamless data flow availability. Detailed timing and orbit for the switch between Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2C will be communicated in the coming days.
Following the activation of Sentinel-2C, Sentinel-2A will be gradually transferred to an In-Orbit Standby position. Further information concerning Sentinel-2A will be provided in the coming weeks.
It is reminded that as announced in the news “publication of the preliminary Sentinel-2C dataset”, an initial dataset of Sentinel-2C data products can be accessed on the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem (https://dataspace.copernicus.eu). Users can explore the dataset through the Copernicus Browser(https://browser.dataspace.copernicus.eu) by applying the Satellite Platform filter set to "S2C".
