We are pleased to announce a new processing baseline for Copernicus Sentinel-1 L1 and L2 products.
The products generated after the deployment of this version tag version 3.9.0 of the operational processor in the corresponding product metadata.
The new Processing Baseline includes:
Level-1:
Correction of regression in burst ID annotation introduced with previous IPF version, impacting a small number of bursts. This was a recurrent anomaly reported in quality disclaimers Nr. 245, 247 and correlated ones (see https://sar-mpc.eu/disclaimer/).
Transfer of all parameters related to configuration of RFI mitigation from internal configuration to the auxiliary data file AUX_PP1. This complements the migration of RFI tuning parameters initiated with IPF 3.8.0. At the occasion of the deployment of the new IPF version, the detection parameters in the AUX_PP1 have also been adjusted to reduce the number of misdetection.
Level-2:
Correction of geolocation of stripmap (SM) OCN products. For this particular mode (SM), the previous L2 IPF versions annotated the bottom left corner of the measurement window instead of its center.
Correction of invalid estimation of wind speed and direction in few L2 OWI products due to invalid heading computation under specific conditions.
Provision of OCN RVL measurements over international day changing line.
Improvement of robustness of land mask annotation for OCN RVL measurement.
Update of Total Hs implementation in the L2 OSW processor, which is now based on a variant of a Quach, et. al. 2020. With the change, starting from IPF 3.9.0, CWAVE parameters are derived from cartesian cross-spectra. The corresponding AUX_ML2 has been circulated at the occasion of deployment, and the computation of the oswTotalHs variable, which was turned off since IPF 3.8.0, has been re-activated.
Further improvement of OSW inversion with new tuning of the RAR MTF to remove wind dependencies.
The new processing baseline was deployed on 25th of November 2024.
The Sentinel-1 Level-2 Algorithm Technical Baseline documents were minimally amended in accordance to the Level-2 changes, but with no change in product format. Moreover the Sentinel-1 Auxiliary Product Specification was minimally updated to describe new parameters in AUX_PP1. The applicable documents to version 3.9.0 can be accessed here.
