Thematic Areas - Land Monitoring - Risk Mapping - Sentinel Online
Identifying risks on land and in water can be a vital tool for prevention and for providing solutions. Satellites can provide invaluable views from a higher perspective, and help to analyse risks.
Sentinel-3's SLSTR instrument supports Land Monitoring applications including Risk (i.e. Fire Location and Radiative Power), and Forestry (i.e. NDVI generation and Land Surface Temperature (LST)). More on Sentinel-3's Land Monitoring applications can be found in the User Guide.

The effects of climate change, population growth and economic development in the Mediterranean are posing a threat to the water supply in the region. As part of ESA's TIGER initiative, satellite data are supporting water management by identifying water resources.

In May 2012, two earthquakes struck Italy's Emilia-Romagna region, claiming at least 27 lives and causing widespread damage. Through GMES, damage assessment maps derived from satellite data were promptly produced to assist emergency response activities.

The use of data from Earth-observing satellites in the insurance business is still in the early stages, but pressure to be ready for more frequent extreme-weather events is increasing.

Earth-observing satellites can map natural phenomena such as floods and earthquakes, track hurricanes and monitor land subsidence across the globe. This information can be valuable to insurance companies for risk and damage assessment.
