With the first Copernicus satellite now operational, ESA and the DLR German Aerospace Center have signed an arrangement on managing and accessing Sentinel data.

In this study scientists investigate the properties of metrics derived from the availability of repeated acquisitions of Envisat Advanced SAR (ASAR) data, acquired in the moderate resolution (150 m) Wide Swath Mode (WSM), to demonstrate their usefulness in the context of land surface characterisation and assess the potential of moderate resolution SAR data to complement classification of water bodies in global land cover products with particular regard to the detection of open water bodies.

Sentinel-2A is in the middle of an extensive testing programme to make sure this land-monitoring satellite is fit for launch next spring. As well as being shaken and stressed, engineers have also checked that it will separate from the rocket for its life in orbit.

In a landmark agreement for Europe's Copernicus programme, the European Commission and ESA have signed an agreement of over €3 billion to manage and implement the Copernicus 'space component' between 2014 and 2021.

Significant Wave Height (SWH) is mapped globally through Satellite Altimetry. SWH estimation is possible because the shape of a pulse-limited altimetric waveform depends on the sea state. The algorithm for SWH also depends on the width of the point target response (PTR) function.

As of today, data from the Sentinel-1A satellite is available to all users.

With the commissioning of Sentinel-1A completed and the satellite's transfer to the team in charge of its exploitation, its data are available as of today to all users.
