13 - 18 July 2014
IGARSS 2014 is to be held in the beautiful and historic City of Québec on 13-18 July 2014. The symposium is being held in conjunction with the 35th Canadian Symposium on Remote Sensing. Members of the geoscience and remote sensing community and to presentations are welcome to present their most recent findings.
In addition to a host of well established session themes, IGARSS 2014/35th CSRS topics will also include Earth observation for Arctic research, Earth observation for renewable energy, energy budgets and modeling, future satellite programs, global environmental change, international cooperation (including the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites – CEOS ; Global Earth Observation System of Systems - GEOSS), new remote sensing technologies, security and defence, sustainable development, and more. A Summer School will be held the week before the symposium.

The European Space Agency, in the context of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) element, is organising an event dedicated to prepare for scientific exploitation of the Sentinel-2 mission, entitled "Sentinel-2 for Science Workshop", which will be hosted in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy, from 20-22 May 2014.
The workshop is open to ESA Principal Investigators, co-investigators, Sentinel-2 users, scientists, students, representatives from national, European and international space agencies and value adding industries.
12 - 13 May 2014
The Greek Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the European Space Agency, and the European Commission are jointly organising this conference that will be held at the EVGENIDIS Foundation in Athens, Greece, from 12 to 13 May 2014, ushering in a new era for the most important Earth Observation Programme to date.
The conference will focus on how geospatial information and services empower public administrations and business to improve public services, to better their relations with the citizens and customers respectively, and to take better informed decisions on future territorial development, with socio-economic and environmental considerations in mind.

The 10th International Workshop on Greenhouse Gas measurements from space will take place at ESA-ESTEC in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, from 05 to 07 May 2014.
The goal of this workshop is to assess the latest science and technologies of greenhouse gas (GHG) measurements from space. The workshop will address new scientific findings obtained from current and past satellite missions (ENVISAT SCIAMACHY, Aqua AIRS, MeteoSat IASI, GOSAT TANSO-FTS, and Aura TES), as well as the concepts of future satellite missions that are near launch or in preparation (OCO-2, Sentinel-5 precursor, TanSat, OCO-3, MERLIN, GOSAT-2, MicroCarb, Sentinel-5, CarbonSat, ASCENDS, etc.).
The following GHG research topics will be covered in the workshop: satellite missions, retrieval algorithms, data analysis, inverse modelling, ground-based & airborne measurements for validation, mission concepts, and instrument calibration.

The EGU General Assembly 2014 will bring together geoscientists from all over the world into one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary and space sciences. Especially for young scientists, it is the aim of the EGU to provide a forum where they can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geosciences. The assembly is being held in Vienna, Austria on 27 April - 02 May 2014.

The 5th Workshop on Remote Sensing of Vegetation Fluorescence, which will be held in Paris, France in April 2014, will address the current status of research and understanding of vegetation fluorescence, within the framework of the upcoming selection by ESA of the Earth Explorer 8 mission to go forward in the next mission phase.
This workshop will be an opportunity among various scientific communities to discuss and communicate about new advances in the FLEX mission preparatory activities, as well as generic topics related to vegetation fluorescence and its applications. Among the focus topics to be addressed: instrument development; methods for fluorescence retrieval; techniques for signal analysis; ground and airborne measurement campaigns; fluorescence models at leaf, canopy and TOA levels; model inversions; relationships between fluorescence, physiology, canopy structure and CO2 assimilation; and fluorescence applications in environment monitoring.

The 2014 Global Land Project Open Science Meeting will synthesize and discuss the role of the land system as a platform for human-environment interactions, connecting local land use decisions to global impacts and responses.
Main conference themes:
Rethinking land change transitions: drastic changes in land cover and subtle changes in land management Local land users in a tele-connected world: the role of human decision making on land use as both a driver and response to global environmental change
Impacts and responses: land systems changes to mitigate global environmental change impacts and adapt to increasing demands for food, fuel and ecosystem services
Land governance: the ways in which alternative approaches to governance of land resources can enhance the sustainability transition.

A joint workshop of the EARSeL SIG LULC and the NASA LCLUC Science Team will be held Humboldt University in Berlin from 17 to 18 March 2014. The workshop will focus on: Landsat-8 and the upcoming Sentinels, together with an increasing number of free-access EO data archives open up new possibilites for space-based analysis of land use and land cover chance. This first joint workshop of the EARSeL SIG LULC and NASA's LCLUC Science Team focuses on the new frontiers in remote sensing analyses that result from these new possibilities. The workshop is organized along four themes:
- New sensors and emerging opportunities for land use and land cover monitoring
- Advances in Land-Cover and Land-Use Science using Earth Observations
- Mining the archives: better use of existing data for long-term LUCC studies
- Frontiers in Remote Sensing of Land Cover and Land Use

The Ninth Conference on Image Information Mining will be held at the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) in Bucharest, Romania from 05 to 07 March, 2014. The event is sponsored by the Image Information Mining Coordination Group (IIMCG) and the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS). The focus of this year's conference is: The Sentinels Era.
The main topics to be discussed during the conference are: image information mining, image semantic automatic annotation, multi modal and multi-sensor information extraction. The event is aimed at European space agencies and organisations, aerospace industry and research centres, value added companies and service providers.

The objective of the "Global Vegetation Monitoring and Modeling" International Conference (GV2M) is to bring researchers together to discuss the new developments in the use of remote sensing observations and Earth system modeling with emphasis on applications related to water, carbon and nitrogen cycles, climate processes and change, agriculture and forest monitoring over large spatial domains using possibly long time series of satellite observations.

The LPVE workshop will be held at ESA/ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, on January 28-30, 2014.The European Space Agency is organising a workshop on calibration, validation and evolution of land products. Scientists and Cal/Val experts are provided with the opportunity to present latest results from their on-going research, including the evolution of products, the development of validation, the inter-comparison methodologies and the evolution of algorithms.
The workshop will focus on optical imaging sensors from ESA missions (MERIS, (A)ATSR, PROBA-V, etc.), ESA Third Party Missions (LANDSAT, ALOS, etc.), and national missions. During this workshop results from recently reprocessed land data sets will be presented and contributions for future ESA missions using existing data sets and validation infrastructures are encouraged.
26 - 29 November 2013
The Sentinel-3A satellite is due for launch at the end of 2014. Validation preparation activities start in Phase C/D of the Mission and will last until Launch. As part of this process a Sentinel-3 Validation Team (S3VT) has been convened by ESA and EUMETSAT to assist in the scientific validation of mission products and services. The meeting will be held in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy.
The objective of the S3VT is to provide independent vailidation evidence, experimental data and recommendations to the S3 mission.
07 - 08 October 2013
The Coastal Altimetry Community, that is the international community of scientists working on development and applications of altimetry in the coastal zone, will meet at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Boulder, Colorado, from 07 to 08 October 2013 for the 7th Workshop of the successful Coastal Altimetry series.
The workshop will provide a lively forum for a community-led review of the science and applications of coastal altimetry, from data processing through emerging applications to new technologies.

The 3rd ESA Advanced Training on Ocean Remote Sensing course will be held in Cork, Ireland, at the National Maritime College of Ireland from 23 to 27 September 2013.
As part of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) programme element, the European Space Agency (ESA) is organising a series of advanced thematic training courses devoted to train the next generation of Earth Observation (EO) scientists to use data from ESA and operational EO Missions for science and applications development.

The 2013 European Space Agency Living Planet Symposium follows the previous successful symposia held in Bergen (2010), Montreux (2007) and Salzburg (2004). The event will be held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom from 09 to 13 September 2013 and is organised with the support of the UK Space Agency.
The aim of the Symposium is to present the results of ESA EO missions exploitation by providing a forum for investigators to report and discuss results of on-going science activities.

The European Space Agency (ESA) is organising a series of advanced thematic training courses devoted to train the next generation of Earth Observation (EO) scientists to exploit data from ESA and Third Party EO Missions for science and applications development.
Post graduate, PhD students, post-doctoral research scientists and users from European countries and Canada interested in land remote sensing and its applications are invited to attend a 5 day course which will be held in Harokopio University, Athens, Greece from 1 to 5 July 2013. Research scientists and students from all other countries are also welcome to apply and participate to the course, subject to space availability.

The Satellite Soil Moisture Validation and Application Workshop will be held at ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy, from 1 to 3 July 2013. The objective of the workshop is to discuss and reconcile recent methodological advances in the validation and application of global satellite soil moisture data. The workshop will focus on soil moisture products derived from current and future active and passive microwave sensors operating in the low frequency range from 1 to 10 GHz, including but not limited to ASCAT, SMOS, AMSR-E, ASAR, SMAP, Sentinel-1 and any combination thereof.

The European Space Agency and the Norwegian Space Centre are jointly organising the fourth SAR oceanography workshop, SEASAR 2012, entitled "Advances in SAR Oceanography", which is to be hosted in Tromso, Norway, from 18 to 22 June 2012.
The workshop is open to scientists and students in the field of SAR oceanography including ESA Principle Investigators and co-investigators, to users of data from future SAR missions like Sentinel-1 and Radarsat Constellation Mission (RCM) and to representatives from national, European and international space agencies and value adding industry.

ESA and EUMETSAT are jointly organising a Workshop on Sentinel-3 Calibration and Validation planning which will be held in ESA-ESRIN, Frascati, Italy.
This meeting will present an overview and status of Sentinel-3 calibration and validation activities, review the Draft Sentinel-3 Calibration/Validation Plan (CVP), seek lessons learned feedback and inputs from previous R&D and operational missions. The calibration and validation community will provide Sentinel-3 teams with prioritized recommendations to ensure an effective and successful mission cal/val outcome.
Particular emphasis will be given to operational cal/val issues and associated activities.
