Minimize Level-1 Processing Overview

The principal aim of the SENTINEL-3 SLSTR instrument mission is to maintain continuity with the (A)ATSR series of instruments. The SENTINEL-3 SLSTR design supports this by incorporating the basic functionality of AATSR, with the addition of some new, more advanced, features. These include a wider swath, new channels (including two channels dedicated to fire detection) and higher resolution in some channels.

The final objective of Level-1 processing is to derive a data product containing calibrated, geolocated brightness temperatures for the thermal channels and radiances for the short wave, near infrared, and visible channels, together with appropriate annotation data, in particular quality and classification flags as well as useful meteorological parameters. These form the starting point of the Level-2 algorithms for retrieval of geophysical parameters such as surface temperature.

The overall well-established algorithm scheme built for AATSR is used as a baseline for SLSTR data processing. There are three different modes:

  • SLSTR Level-1 calibration processing mode
  • SLSTR Level-1 observation processing mode
  • SLSTR Level-1 joint calibration/observation mode, which allow the two modes above to be executed jointly.

The processing mode is determined by a user-defined processing control parameter.
