Title: Fire radiative power (FRP) data recorded over Australia

Description: The Copernicus Sentinel-3A and -3B satellites together provide a daily view of the fires and smoke coming from the massive bush fires burning in eastern Australia.  The image on the left was collected by the SLSTR instrument operating onboard Copernicus Sentinel-3A on 3 January 2020.

The active fires detected by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 FRP product are shown as red dots, overlain on the colour composite, which shows a huge smoke plume travelling to the southeast. The image on the right shows the FRP of the fires in more detail, quantified in units of MegaWatts. The more powerful the fire, the more rapidly it is burning vegetation and releasing smoke, and it is this relationship that is used by the GFAS system to produce fire smoke emissions estimates for use in the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS).
