Within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations, great attention is given to the future mechanism REDD + (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation).

Implementation of REDD+ implies retrieval and monitoring of parameters such as landcover, forest type and carbon stock.Satellite data and techniques based on such data are widely used to derive the above parameters, however cloud cover in tropical areas limits usability of optical data.
