Monitoring industrial infrastructure using Sentinel-1 radar

Radar data from the Sentinel-1 mission of the European Union’s Copernicus Programme are supporting a bespoke monitoring service for cement operations and nuclear waste in Hungary.
Cement plants consist of various types of equipment and infrastructure, such as storage warehouses and silos. One key function of the application platform is helping to identify potential structural issues in cement operations.

One of the major producers of cement for the Hungarian construction industry is Holcim Hungary Ltd. The company operates a modern manufacturing cement plant in Királyegyháza and a quarry in Bükkösd.

Holcim are using DATelite's technology to improve routine monitoring of their key infrastructure, as well as detecting any environmental damage caused by cement plant vibrations and quarry explosions.

DATelite, aims at achieving a broader use and adoption of InSAR in other industries in Hungary, such as nuclear waste management, reclamation of former mining sites, and disaster prevention in relation to landslides.
The potential of InSAR methods based on Copernicus Sentinel-1 has been demonstrated with operational applications for monitoring infrastructure in Hungarian industry. The next step will be to expand these InSAR applications over Central Europe.
