Dunia is an all-in-one, easy to use Earth observation platform for processing and disseminating data over Africa, which also works on mobiles. Hosted on the Sentinel Online website, users can exploit a unique collection of remote sensing datasets.

Dunia’s goal is to provide a state-of-the-art cloud environment, facilitating the effective use of Earth observation data by both expert and non-expert users, throughout Africa.

At the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) & Africa Forum in Egypt, ESA officially presented Dunia. Developed through a collaboration between GeoVille, CS Group, CloudFerro and DLR, it aims to contribute to Africa’s sustainable development.

Since the November 2023 forum, 289 new users gained access to the platform, fully able to exploit its carefully curated datasets.

Dunia gives users the freedom to share and work together on data with other users, fostering a thriving community of knowledge exchange.

An online training programme and comprehensive tutorials are tailored for newcomers, so that everyone can benefit from the tools at their fingertips.

Following the momentum of Egypt’s forum, on 12 and 13 December 2023, the Dunia Hackathon on Earth Observation for Sustainable Natural Resource Management in Africa took place, in Tunis and online.

254 people from 34 countries in Africa registered for the competition, which enabled two winning teams to develop innovative solutions that leveraged Earth Observation data on various thematic issues.
